To realize your dream of becoming a doctor, securing admission to any reputed medical school is the primary step. Due to the rising competition in the academic sector, medical schools have specific criteria for admitting aspiring students to various courses.

The number of seats available for various medical programs is less compared to the number of applicants each year. So, most of the top institutions have put certain medical school requirements in place to select the best candidates from the numerous applications they receive.

If you are planning to get into any medical school, check the requirements listed below to ensure that your application passes the check.

  • Undergraduate Degree

A valid undergraduate degree and general education are mandatory criteria to secure admission to any medical school. It does not matter whether you have completed your education in arts, social science, philosophy, humanities or science, all that counts is the completion of any academic course. Most institutions respect academic differences and do not discriminate based on your undergraduate subject of study. However, preferences will be given to students who have studied science subjects such as biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry as part of their curriculum.

  • Pre-medical Coursework

As stated above, students with an idea of the basic science subjects will be prioritised over other candidates due to their familiarity with parts of the medical curriculum. The pre-med courses required for admissions are as follows:

  • One year of general biology or zoology course.
  • One year of inorganic chemistry with laboratory practice.
  • One of organic chemistry with laboratory sessions.
  • One academic year of English is also recommended to fulfil the pre-medical requirements.
  • English Proficiency

The importance of the English language is clear when it is listed along with other pre-medical coursework requirements. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are preferred by medical schools for ease of teaching. As the medium of instruction in every reputed medical school is English, it is necessary that the students are well versed in the language to understand the curriculum. Applicants who are not natives of the English language should take the TOEFL or IELTS test to prove their proficiency.

  • MCAT

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is mandatory for all applicants who are US citizens and strongly recommended for all others. Students who meet the following criteria are also required to take the MCAT test which is qualifying in nature.

  • Students whose science coursework is outdated (more than 5 years).
  • Students who did their coursework at any community college.
  • Students with low grades in the science courses (C grade or lower).

The test will be conducted by AAMC to analyse your knowledge of the medical curriculum.

These are the major requirements based on which you will be evaluated for admissions. Besides these academic mandates, your ethical and professional standards will also be analysed as these are necessary skills required in the medical career. If you believe you have what it takes to become a good doctor, go forward with your application to the medical schools of your choice.
